Second Skin
Excerpts from the "Second Skin" chapter of
Art Cars
by Harrod Blank:
This category of art cars is similar to painted cars. The lines and
general integrity of the original cars are preserved, while materials
or groups of objects are literally laid over the car like a second
skin.
It is [the] tactile element that attracts many people to work with
different materials to break up the stereotypically smooth and shiny
surface most cars have.
Part of the magic is in making the "skin" seamless so that
the creative techniques do not dominate the overall work. The high
attention to detail, meticulous application, and tremendous time
factor involved in the making of second-skin cars can invite the
label of "fine art".
